The Nemo Room, the first IMAX cinema on board a superyacht

Yacht Intelligence, Ken Freivokh design, Genesis Technologies and its partner IMAX have developed the ultimate experience of a cinema on board a superyacht. Its name? The Nemo Room.

Watching movies or the ocean floor on board your superyacht

Yacht Intelligence, the leading provider of customized audio and video products for superyachts, has developed the first immersive movie experience. Together with IMAX, they have created the first private IMAX theater aboard a superyacht.

This private theater will not only be used to watch blockbuster movies. It will be able to project live images from underwater cameras onto the walls of the theater to admire the sea creatures from your seat. Hence the name Nemo Room. This private cinema room will have many entertainment options: Blu-ray disc player, live streaming content, games and video conferencing.

This concept became a reality thanks to designer Ken Freivokh, who is passionate about audiovisuals. He designed a 150m long yacht for a client who was curious to test new ideas. Thus, the group was able to work on the development of this project, within the boat.

A project not so easy to implement

Developing an IMAX theater in a superyacht was not an easy project for the entire team. " With the strict parameters of IMAX and the incredibly specific technological requirements, our first challenge was to persuade them to take us seriously. We had to prove that it would be possible to create a truly unique private theater on a superyacht." explains Alan Bernardi, Founder and Managing Director of Yacht Intelligence.

For the production teams, the design was special because they had to work in the unusual space of a hull. Normally, this area would have been reserved for tanks and storage. To achieve the desired movie experience, the space was intelligently designed. The client will enter the theater through walls instead of sliding doors to create a seamless, smooth projection surface to enhance the immersive effect of IMAX.

Revolutionary technologies for large format projection

In addition to the space constraints, a great deal of attention had to be paid to the revolutionary technologies behind IMAX. Each IMAX private theater system has an image enhancer. A camera reads the image on the screen and returns it to the projector. This system allows for real-time adjustment to ensure that the image on the screen is perfect. IMAX also uses a state-of-the-art Dual 4K projection system to provide crystal clear, realistic images.

A microphone system collects data from each individual channel in the speaker system. It performs daily tuning calibrations and makes the correction for each channel so that the sound is always perfectly tuned.

IMAX is a giant format that allows films to be projected in XXL size. Thus, the image is 10 times larger than in a conventional cinema, the sound is enveloping and the hemispherical screen projects the viewer into the heart of the action. IMAX films are shot with 70mm cameras (as opposed to the traditional 35mm).
