Lagoon 77, a balcony for the first time on a sailboat!

After the presentation of the Lagoon 630 Motor Yacht at the Cannes 2014 boat show, the Bordeaux-based catamaran specialist shipyard took the opportunity of the event to announce a future Lagoon 77.

Designed by the VPLP architectural firm, like the rest of the Lagoon range, this future 77-footer has been announced for the 2016 Cannes boat show, one year from now. This yacht takes up the concept inaugurated in 2013 with the Lagoon 39, and then extended to the 52.

This involves moving the mast back to benefit from a different sail plan, with a very narrow mainsail, rather like a wing, and a self-tacking jib which, because the mast is aft, offers an interesting surface area to maintain performance. This type of rig is a variation on what we see on today's racing multihulls.

Very little information has been leaked about the future 77. But we can announce that this yacht will be the first to feature a balcony opening onto the owner's hull. Similar to what can be seen on certain Mega Yachts, the planking will tilt to transform into a balcony flush with the water! At anchor, the owner can enjoy a private space with direct access to the sea.

A technological feat which must pose serious problems for the shipyard's design office, as the rigidity of the platform must not be compromised. When you consider that the insertion of portholes in the planking already poses certain rigidity problems, you can imagine the problem of opening up part of the hull completely...

As with the 620, which was also available as an engine version under the 630 name (with an extended skirt to support the engine's power), the 78, the engine version of the 77, is due to be unveiled at the Miami Motor Show in the USA.
