Sangria, the cruising sailboat icon of the seventies

How to choose your second-hand sailboat? This week the Sangria. Round hull and beach before XXL, the Sangria is a best seller from Jeanneau in the 1970s.

  • 2,156 copies from 1969 to 1982
  • From 3,000 euros for the first copies - before 1978.
  • 7,000 euros for a Sangria NV in good condition with a maintained inboard engine.

Built by the Jeanneau shipyard, the most recent examples (1976 to 1982) are worth it. Better presented, better equipped, they will lighten the repair note.

The strong points of the Sangria: Its marine behaviour and its beautiful habitable volume. No dinghy version. Philippe Harlé drew two keel profiles (1.20 or 1.48 m draught).

The short ballast can run aground on crutches, preferably on firm ground because the rudder, which carries a little, is likely to sink... night of horror in perspective for the crew! Gibert Marine built the first Sangria GTE, more regatta oriented.

The diagnosis of Bateaux.com

As with all units built more than 30 years ago, an original engine will necessarily be tired or even out of breath. To be checked closely, with oil analysis in case of doubt.

Most of the Sangria suffered from the quality and rough installation of their linings. If it's done again, that's good. Otherwise, plan a few weekends of DIY in the cabin!

Note: some models have suffered from a poor quality of casting of their keel. If your model has a very cratered surface, a "standard" exchange may be appropriate. Second-hand bowling pins? A Sangria in a wrecked state? You will find them in boat ads on LeBonCoin for example.

The advantages

  • Particularly robust construction
  • Softness of the bar at all speeds
  • Healthy and reassuring behaviour in a strong breeze

The -

  • Slim cockpit
  • No access to the sea
  • Roller downwind

But what is it missing?

A rear carrier for downward-lifting looks and a beautiful rear skirt.

The equivalent today?

The Maxus 26 , a cosy family cruiser that is available in a wide range of appendages and accommodation options.

"Like all Philippe Harlé's boats, the Sangria is fond of light airs. As if he was on the water, he then progressed without a wake and the helmsman could not complain about the genoa flat deck which, if he obstructed his view, would pick up the slightest crumbs of wind."
