What do the letters on the hull of a boat mean?

The registration number of a vessel is 8 characters long. The first two letters define the registration district. A geographical indication that no longer means much today.

When you buy a boat, sailboat or motor boat, you have to register it. This registration request is made by the buyer of the boat (who can mandate the seller if he is a professional). You must then send your application for registration by contacting a registration district.

How to choose your registration district?

There is no obligation in this area. You can register your boat in the neighbourhood you like. There are 45 in France! A registration number will then be assigned to your boat. It will be composed of 2 letters which indicate the quarter of registration to which you belonged followed by 6 characters (letters and numbers).

The 45 registration quarters have replaced the former Maritime Affairs quarters since 1 January 2007 er january 2010, but have retained the same geographical boundaries.
