Mercury equips its joystick with an automatic pilot

Mercury Joystick

After the Activ Trim which automatically adjusts the inclination of the engines, here is the new joystick capable of handling the helm better than the best pilot. With its new joystick, Mercury takes driving assistance a step further.

While Mercury's new joystick has a new, modern look, it is not only this feature that caught our attention when we read the American engine manufacturer's press release.

Indeed, this joystick - like those of the competition - drives two engines (outboard or inboard) and allows simple hand movements to control the manoeuvring of your boat. The two engines are independent in direction - they are equipped with 2 independent steering cylinders - and can move the boat in all directions by acting on the shuttle.

All engine manufacturers offer this possibility of joystick operation. Mercury goes further with its new model. If used for manoeuvring, it also includes an automatic pilot (called Joystick Piloting System). The heading is then adjusted directly from the joystick.

In addition, the system also offers a virtual anchor (called Skyhook). Once engaged, the boat's GPS position is stored and the system works by acting on the engines to keep it in the same place. This is convenient for securing a boat over a fishing area, waiting for a moving deck to open or maintaining its position while waiting for a place on the fuel pontoon.

A major new feature is the coloured ring that changes according to the function activated. The helmsman immediately knows if he is in the right mode before taking control.

An innovation that will be available in the network from October 2016.
