How to automatically request a position from the VHF?

While the VHF DSC is a safety element on board, it can also perform some very interesting functions. The position request is a function that you should not deprive yourself of.

VHF DSCs are distinguished by their very practical functions. In addition to the possibility of easily sending a distress signal (simply by pressing the button on the front panel), it can also be used to call a boat by name (by sending an audible alarm that only the person concerned receives). But it is also possible to request its position from a VHF.

This request is called the Position Request. Simply send the request to a known MMSI number (or one already entered in the directory) and the remote station will send you its longitude and latitude.

The response function can be manual (as in our video example) or automatic. The automatic response can be interesting when you entrust a portable VHF DSC like the Icom IC-M93D to follow your child on land or in navigation.
