Evinrude is the only manufacturer still offering 2-stroke outboard engines. Its 25 to 300 hp range requires no valves or engine oil tanks. In 2-stroke, oil is injected at critical points and fewer mechanical parts are required. In comparison, a 4-stroke engine with its camshafts, chains or belts, valves... cannot suffer from a lack of overhaul.
This is the big advantage of the 2 strokes.
A visual review by the owner
Evinrude has therefore introduced a review frequency that is much less stringent than that of the competition. Indeed, the first visit to the dealer should only take place after 5 years (or 500 hours)! A not insignificant financial gain.
This manufacturer involves the owner of the engine by announcing substantial savings to motivate him. The latter will have to start with a visual check to be carried out. When wintering, he will have to make sure that the anodes are in good condition (very simple to change). If his engine is a G2 model, he will have to watch the oil tank of his base plate to detect either a leak (drop in level) or a problem of water entry (mayonnaise). And finally start the wintering car.
A rinse without having to get out of the water.
Even though marine engines are designed to withstand salt water, it is advisable to rinse it out to remove salt from the cooling system during winter storage. If your engine is out of the water, you can connect ears to the base plate (as with all engines) and run it for a while. But Evinrude also offers the option of connecting a water jet directly to the motor at the cable connection (i.e., out of the water) and running the motor. This flushing can even be done if the engine is in water.
Please note that during winter storage, it is advisable to leave the motor vertical so that the water inside is automatically drained off. In this way, there is no risk of damaging it by freezing. There is also no need to charge the engine with antifreeze.
An auto-wintering mode
The entire Evinrude engine line has an auto-wintering mode. This mode, which engages from the dashboard, starts the engine and runs it by delivering more oil than necessary. After 2 minutes of operation in this mode, the engine automatically shuts off. This "over-lubrication" will lubricate the entire engine and protect it during winter storage. Restarting does not require any manipulation. The engine will just smoke a little more than normal for a few minutes while the excess grease is drained off.
First review after 5 years
After 5 years or 500 hours of operation, the engine must be returned to the dealer, who will carry out the usual maintenance operations: removal of the base plate, checking the spark plugs, etc
