What permit do I need to tow my boat trailer?

You can't just hang any trailer behind your car and tow your boat. Depending on the validated weight of the trailer, an appropriate permit is required. In 2013 a new (simpler) regulation was put in place to have the right to tow a trailer. Explanation in 4 points.

Take into account the GVW

The trailer pictured here has a GVW of 650 kg

The new regulations only take the GVW into account. The GVW is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating . Today, this notion is indicated on a vehicle registration document in the F1 section, under the name Masse en charge maximale techniquement admissible (Technically permissible maximum laden mass). This weight is set by the manufacturer. It can also be found on trailer nameplates. A vehicle's GVW must not be confused with other commonly used values. First of all, you need to distinguish between GVWR and GVWR. This second value designates the total authorized rolling weight, i.e. the weight of the various vehicles (car and trailer, for example) that must not be exceeded.

Failure to comply with the maximum permissible laden weight is a breach of the Highway Code. The driver is liable to a fine of 4 e and the vehicle in question may be immobilized immediately. The fine incurred depends on the seriousness of the infringement. In other words, the more a vehicle is loaded above the authorized weight, the greater the offence:

  • The fine is 135 euros, without immobilization, when the excess weight does not exceed 5% of the gross vehicle weight.
  • When the weight exceeds the authorized value by 5 to 20%, a fine of 4 % is always applied e class fine of 135 euros, but with immobilization of the vehicle.
  • Beyond that, a fine of 5 e class penalty of 1,500 euros, with vehicle immobilization and possible legal proceedings.

Trailer less than 750 kg GVW: PERMIT B

Sum of GVWR (trailer + car) less than 3500 kg: PERMIT B

Sum of GVWR (trailer + car) between 3500 and 4250 kg: PERMIS B + B96 training

B96 is a 7-hour training course open to all holders of the B license. It takes place on a plateau (off-road) and then on an open road. The off-road sequence (4 hours) alternates theory and practice, with the aim of acquiring knowledge specific to this type of vehicle. The in-traffic phase (3 hours) focuses on adapting driving behavior.

There's no test to take, and you'll receive a certificate of practical training, a copy of which is sent to your local prefecture. Please note: to drive this type of vehicle, you need to go to the prefecture to have the additional mention 96 added to your driving license. The cost is around 400euros (2023 rate).

Sum of GVWRs (trailer + car) greater than 4250 kg and where the GVWRs of the trailer and the vehicle remain less than 3500 kg so as not to exceed a total GVWR of 4250 kg 7000 kg GVWR : BE PERMIT

The BE license is a comprehensive test that requires you to have had the Code for less than 5 years (or to be taking it again!), then to take the test with an off-road test (plate with a maneuver and a question on coupling) and an on-road test. This license is valid for 15 years from the date of the test, and also requires a medical examination (non-renewable).
