Pen Duick III, the story of the incredible black schooner that terrorized the English

Here is the story of Pen Duick III, a schooner with an ultra innovative hull that was born in 1967, designed by and for the famous Éric Tabarly. The objective? Taking part in the races of the Royal Ocean Racing Race championship, but above all taking part on board in the 1968 English Transat An event that ultimately did not happen, Éric Tabarly preferring the Pen Duick IV trimaran to him

In 1967, the schooner won all the races of the season and crowned its success with its victory over the Sydney-Hobart, with the youngest crew in the race. Average age: 22 years... But this victory will also sign the replacement of the schooner rigging for that of the ketch... The English were a little sensitive on the supremacy of the French on their races decided to force the rules for the schooner rigging.

Éric Tabarly will continue to sail on Pen Duick III before handing over the helm of his famous 17.45m sailboat to some great skippers. Thus, from 1978 to 1989, the monohull took part in the Route du Rhum, the Vendée Globe, or served as a cruising school... Pen Duick III covered nearly 300,000 miles and carried three different rigs: schooner, ketch and sloop.

Bequeathed to Jacqueline and Marie Tabarly - widow and daughter of... - Pen Duick joined the Éric Tabarly association - created in 1998 - in 2008. The sailboat with the black hull will undergo many yards which will restore its former splendor.

Since then, the yacht continues to sail in the hands of professional skippers and participates in numerous regattas and events. He was the star of the Nautic 2017, celebrating his 50th birthday with dignity!
