How to safely turn a rope on a winch

The winch is used to increase its strength. It is a piece of hardware found mainly on sailboats. It is used on the halyards (to set sails) and on the sheets (to adjust sails). But strength, traction and danger. A winch must therefore be used properly to ensure that the manoeuvre is carried out safely.

1 - Check the winding direction

Before you even start turning the rope around the winch, check the direction of winding. How many neophytes have surrounded a rope upside down... To do this, take the doll in hand and find its direction of rotation. It's simple, basic, but effective!

2 - Roll up starting from the bottom

By taking the rope (here a jib sheet), we come to make turns around the doll. At this stage, there is no need to put tension in the string. It is just necessary that the loops follow one another without passing one on top of the other.

3 - 3 turns minimum

The number of turns of the rope around the doll limits slippage and ensures that the rope is held on the winch. We recommend doing at least 3 laps to act safely.

4 - Embark by hand

Before using the crank, you pull the rope with your hands (the crew member engages). To prevent the rope from jamming, pull up slightly. The rope is wound cleanly on the winch. This manoeuvre is done to save time and avoid getting everything started with the crank (long and laborious).

5 - Install self-tailing

On a winch equipped with it (not all models), self-tailing makes it possible to keep the rope locked and winch with the crank without having to keep it in tension. To do this, the rope is passed over the finger and wrapped between the 2 locking discs.

6 - Installation of the crank handle

It is only when the winch is ready that the crank is positioned. You don't have to do it any sooner or it will come to turn quickly when you get in the car. Often the crank handle is equipped with a ratchet to prevent it from escaping from the winch.

7 - Winchez

With one or two hands for more strength, you can force the crank. Make sure that your force is being used wisely and that you are not forcing on something that is jamming..

8 - And to shock?

Caution danger! The forces exerted on the ropes are enormous. To shock, do not undo the turns around the winch. Indeed, you may then have your fingers burned by the rope that leaves very quickly.

To act safely, one hand must be placed against the rope around the winch and the other hand gently releases the tension. The first hand will turn the turns and accompany the decrease in tension.
