80% of ocean pollution is man-made
Each year, nearly 9 million tonnes of waste end up in the oceans. Every second, 206 kilos of rubbish reach our seas and by 2050, there will be more garbage in the water than fish.
First, 80% of them come from the continents and are not directly discharged into the sea and 100% are of human origin.
The Surfrider Foundation, which works to protect the ocean, therefore started from the following observation: if human beings pollute, they can also adapt their behaviour.
An application to change consumption behaviour
The NGO has decided to go even further in its awareness-raising approach by launching a free mobile application. Indeed, the telephone has become our daily life and accompanies us throughout the day.
Ocean's Zero is an app developed by Surfrider Foundation to learn the right things to reduce waste and adopt a healthier and more environmentally friendly lifestyle.
Through 25 challenges, the association hopes to educate users to reduce their production, on a daily basis and at their own pace. Simple and concrete actions to save the oceans, as the NGO hopes, such as replacing plastic bottles with water bottles or refusing straws..
The Ocean's Zero application will also offer you various actions to manufacture your own cosmetics or sanitary products, change your consumption habits, or test your knowledge,
You will have a progress gauge to achieve a zero waste lifestyle and you will be able to see the effect of your actions on the oceans. But also to see how many users have achieved the same challenge as you and your environmental impact.
A fundraising campaign that works
The NGO raised funds through Ulule to develop its application, with the support of the Bouygues Télécom Foundation. And with only 16 days left to collect the expected ?20,000 (NDRL: as of October 4, 2018), Surfrider Foundation has already raised ?19,370
