Evinrude is the only manufacturer still offering 2-stroke outboard engines. Its range from 25 to 300 hp operates without valves or engine oil. In 2 steps, the oil is injected into critical areas and the number of mechanical parts is reduced. In comparison, a 4-stroke engine with its camshafts, chains or belts, valves... cannot suffer from a lack of overhaul. This is the big advantage of the 2-stroke injection system offered by the brand.
A visual inspection carried out by the owner
Evinrude has therefore set up a review frequency that is much less restrictive than that of the competition. Indeed, the first visit to the dealer must only be made after 5 years (or 500 hours)! A significant financial gain.
This manufacturer involves the owner of the engine by announcing substantial savings to motivate him, who will have to start with a visual check of the various control points to be carried out. At the time of wintering, he will have to make sure that his anodes are in good condition (very easy to change). He will have to monitor the oil tank on his base plate to detect either a leak (low level) or a water ingress problem (mayonnaise). And finally to trigger the self-wintering. Nevertheless, Evinrude recommends an annual visit to a dealer for users who do not wish to carry out these various operations.
A rinse without having to leave the water.
Even if marine engines are designed to withstand salt water, it is advisable to rinse them to remove salt from the cooling system during wintering. If your motor is out of water, you can plug ears into the base plate (as with all motors) and run it for a while.
But Evinrude also offers you the possibility of connecting a water jet directly to the engine at the exhaust. This can even be done if the engine is in the water. However, such rinsing is less effective than rinsing with ears.
It should be noted that during wintering, it is advisable to leave the motor vertical so that the water inside is automatically evacuated. This way you will not have any risk of damaging it by freezing. It is also not necessary to charge your engine with an antifreeze liquid.
A self-wintering mode
The entire Evinrude engine range has an auto-winter mode. This mode, which is activated from the dashboard, starts the engine and runs it, sending more oil than necessary. After 2 minutes of operation in this mode the motor switches off automatically. This "over-lubrication" will lubricate the entire engine and protect it during wintering, this "wintering" mode can be used as many times as desired throughout the season, and restarting it requires no handling. Just the engine will smoke a little more than normal for a few minutes while the excess grease is removed.
First revision after 5 years
It is only after 5 years or 500 hours of operation that the engine must return to the dealer. This one will then carry out the usual maintenance interventions: removal of the base, checking the spark plugs..
