Since the acquisition of the XM brand in 1999, Plastimo has been producing and distributing seawear. Wax, overalls, fleece... this manufacturer has a complete range. For the past 3 years, Plastimo has integrated designers from other worlds than yachting to help them design their products. This approach has been reflected in the introduction of new products such as the SL180 lifejacket or paddle or longline jackets. Each of these products, in addition to their functionalities, had a different design touch than before. This approach was applied to the development of the new seawear collection.
Activ', technical clothing
For the 2019 season, Plastimo is launching a new collection of seawear called Activ'. This historical manufacturer from Lorient has every right to manufacture textiles. Always active in the protection of the person (rafts, vests...), Plastimo is always looking for comfort and ergonomics to design its products. This reflection on lifejackets continued on clothing.
Breathable clothing
To launch this collection, Plastimo offers a jacket and overalls. The fabric used is a 3-layer laminate that ensures waterproofness and breathability. The hydrophobic membrane being glued to the fabric, the jacket and trousers remain very light to wear. The seams are of course sealed with self-adhesive strips.
For a perfect silhouette
Plastimo doesn't forget women. This Activ' model is available in both men's and women's versions. For the latter, the cut is much more curved to better follow the shape of the body. Isabelle Joschke, skipper of an IMOCA, was the model's tester throughout the summer of 2018 during its development phase and uses this garment for the Route du Rhum 2018.
"Special" overalls
For the Activ' overalls, Plastimo is innovating. The faceplate is removable. Attached to the trousers by a zip, it can be removed. This part of the garment is deliberately very close to the body. It is used to prevent the wind from reaching the body and cooling it. Two neoprene inserts under the arms ensure high elasticity so as not to hinder body movements.
The sailor therefore has the choice of using the dungarees as a traditional model or removing the upper part to make it a simple waterproof pair of pants. The adjustable belt with 2 Velcros allows a good support.
The pants have a gusseted pocket on the leg (pocket with a water drainage hole), but no side pockets to put your hands in.
A very protective jacket
Plastimo is designed for the open sea. The very high collar provides good neck protection with a warmth retention by a fleece lining. On the front side, a foldable mask very covering comes to hide the nose well.
The hood is deliberately very covering, it comes back well on each side of the face. Its adjustment is unique at the back to tighten it around the head. To keep lateral vision (the problem with these very covering hoods), Plastimo has installed transparent panels on each side: protection and visibility.
Often used in skiing, the jacket is equipped with a removable gaiter. This kind of elastic skirt that closes before closing the jacket ensures a waterproof seal at the bottom of the jacket. A non-slip silicone band ensures a good fit on the overalls. Users who do not like this accessory (or who do not use it) will be able to easily unzip it.
Trying is approving it
We were lucky enough to be able to try this set in preview. The first impression is a feeling of quality. Plastimo knows its business and offers a very "Marine" product.
When you put on this jacket, you are surprised by the ease of movement it provides. The navigator will not have been bothered by the clothing. This is especially sensitive in the arms where the fold is preformed with very soft Cordura parts.
On the overalls side, the bib is really very enveloping, it is a garment that is worn close to the body to ensure its function of maintaining heat.
Smart details
In terms of details, we like the use of "anti-cash" Velcros. Only one side of the Velcro is adherent, the other side is neutral. This way, the jacket does not get caught on other textiles when it is stored in a bag, for example.
The many pockets also each have a function. The one on the chest has an exit to let the antenna of a portable VHF overtake. The hand warmer pockets are lined with fleece. A waterproof pocket inside will keep your phone dry... The zips are equipped with rings to facilitate gripping in cold weather or with gloves.
A mid-range price
By offering the jacket at 350 € and the dungarees at 250 € (same prices for the men's and women's models), Plastimo is positioning its Activ' range with an attractive price considering the technical qualities.
