European Yacht of the Year 2019: 3 multihulls for cruising or regattas

Discover 3 models of multihull sailing boats ñ two catamarans and a trimaran ñ for a variety of programmes: comfortable family cruises, low budget cruises or regatta performance.

And to think that 25 years ago, multihulls had an exotic side. Today, catamarans and trimarans are growing rapidly and sometimes you have to be on the waiting list to have your own boat. For cruising, catamarans are particularly appreciated because of their great habitability and the space they offer as well as their stability of navigation. This is why many catas can be found in rental companies. For trimarans, it is more stability and performance that attract owners.

Astrea 42 Pajot Fountain

Located between the Lucia 40 and the Hélia 44, the Astrea 42 is designed by the naval architecture firm Berret Racoupeau. It follows the lines that appeared on the Saona 47 and Lucia 40. In terms of exterior design, note the straight bows, and the rear deck shearing. But also the rupture in the deckhouse, crossed by a black band in the continuity of the portholes.

The layout is designed for sun cruises. Thus the cockpit receives a table for the meal while the saloon is designed as a living room with a coffee table with the possibility of watching television. Under the bridge, the site offers up to 12 possible layouts between the 3 or 4 cabins and the toilet or bathroom.

On deck, the helm station is halfway to starboard (no flybridge). All manoeuvres return to this position. Sunbathing is also common on board. The traditional sunbathing area is located on the front deck (just behind the trampoline) and there is also a sunbathing area on the deckhouse.

Aventura 34

Aventura occupies the catamaran market of less than 10 m, often neglected by large construction sites. The Aventura 34 has the same characteristics as its predecessor the Aventura 33. A size particularly adapted to the Italian market.

It also takes up the angular lines discovered on the Aventura 10 (motor catamaran). No more tillering, this time the boat steers with a wheel placed on the port side at the deckhouse bulkhead. Inside, this sailboat will be available in 2 cabins (2 identical hulls with a cabin and a bathroom) or in a 3 cabin version with only one bathroom in the boat.

Astus 20.5

After 16.5, VPLP designed the new Astus 20.5, which replaced the 20.2, launched 8 years ago. This new trimaran is designed to be more efficient. With much larger floats (930 l VS 700 l), and a central hull with a very tulip-shaped bow so as not to get wet, it also has a flat hull at the rear for easy gliding.

As for the layout, the Astus 20.5 comes standard with a large roof to offer more space. Two versions are available: a leisure version for family sailing and a sport version for regattas.
