48 Wallytender, Wally and Ferretti revisit a classic

The 48 Wallytender

The Ferretti Superyacht Group endorsed the acquisition of the manufacturer Wally at the opening of the German Boat Show at the end of January 2019. The Italian group also took the opportunity to reveal the details of the first motor boat project born out of the partnership between the two luxury yachting pundits: the 48 Wallytender.

Revisit a classic

While this new model retains the lines of the group's first motor boat - the original Wallytender - launched in 2001, it has been improved. As a reminder, the concept of the wallytender was to be able to be used as a real runabout, for day trips and one night on board and not only as a support ship or tender for superyacht or private villa. Wally was one of the precursors of the large tender.

This new model benefits from the elegant design and composite construction of its predecessors, but offers new features and functionalities. The site has worked hard on the larger interior volume, which offers more comfort and convenience. "The challenge was to meet the freeboard without losing the purity of the hull lines associated with all Wally yachts, in order to provide a real nap cabin, and a real shower cabin to refresh yourself." details the Wally site.

Technologies and space

In the cockpit, the yard chose tilting bulwarks, inspired by those developed on the 118 Wallypower, launched in the early 2000s. If today this functionality seems to us to be anchored in yacht design (on Galeon brand stars for example), it was not yet anchored in the era of the 36 m powerboat.

This technology allows the size of the bath platform to be significantly increased. The latter is accessible from an integrated retractable walkway, which can also be transformed into a 5-step bathing ladder.

Comfort day and night on board

On deck, the layout has been designed to promote relaxation with large benches and large sunbathing areas. An outdoor kitchen equipped with two hotplates, a sink and a refrigerator (there is a second one in the cabin) allows you to have meals on board.

On the rear the large sunbathing area can be fully lifted to access the engine compartment or only the cushion that covers a storage area. But it was under the sunbathing bath before we found a bigger chest. Behind the two large chairs in the helm station, a chest is used to store aquatic toys such as an inflatable SUP or diving equipment.

The front bench in the saloon can be configured to face forward when sailing and to face backward at anchor to face the dining table.

In addition to the hard-top, the front and rear cockpits can be protected from the sun by a cover fixed on carbon supports (stored in the nautical toy compartment), a Wally feature introduced in 2003 with the 118 wallypower.

Hidden anchorage

The dampening system consists of an extendable arm hidden behind a flush cover in the bow. It can easily be operated from the steering station. We had already seen this system on the Pardo 43 (Cantiere del Pardo) in Cannes in 2017. Finally, another "innovation", a liston lined with impact-resistant material to replace fenders.

IPS propulsion

The 48 Wallytender receives 2 Volvo IPS 650 engines (a total of 1020 horsepower), with joystick for a maximum speed of 38 knots. A gyroscopic stabilizer is available as an option and installed in a technical compartment separate from the engine to avoid the risk of overheating (such as electrical panels).

This model is presented by the shipyard as a large family boat that is safe for children, with a non-slip teak flush deck and deep, secure bulwarks. The first unit, currently under construction at the Ferretti Group's production site in Forlì, Italy, is expected to be launched in June 2019.
