Web series / Under The Pole III: First atoll for the Why

In this 10th episode of Under The Pole, discovery of the first atoll of the Tuamotu archipelago with diving among grey sharks and the discovery of an underwater cave at a depth of 120 m.

The Why and its crew dock at Tikehau, the first atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago, and the third island in the Deephope programme, which involves the sampling and study of deep corals. It is the first atoll of the Why and the first atoll pass. In any case, the landscapes offered to Ghislain and Emmanuelle correspond well to the imagination they have of them: white sand and cocotiers?!

The dives are made in the middle of the sharks, present in number at 120 m from profondeur?! They are also the opportunity to discover an underwater cave full of grey sharks. A thought for the Cousteau team who had come to this place with Calypso and who had perhaps visited the cave

But dives can also sometimes turn sour. Beware of decompression, which "is not an exact science."

A short stopover that will be greeted by the island's children who will sing and offer flower necklaces to the entire crew

A little vocabulary

Tuamotus are the largest archipelago of coral reefs in the Pacific

An atoll is an often closed ring of coral and limestone that contains a lagoon in its centre. The water is shallow (hence the turquoise colour), only a few tens of metres deep, and has its own ecosystem, very different from that of the ocean.

A reef pass is an opening in a coral reef. It ensures communication between the waters of the lagoon and those of the ocean. In short, it is a kind of ship channel
