Amel 60, a new travel yacht

The year 2019 will be the occasion for Amel to unveil the new Amel 60. We met Stéphanie Rullier, in charge of the shipyard's communication, to introduce us to this new boat, which confirms the architectural evolution of the shipyard in La Rochelle.

Travelling yachts with a solid reputation

The Amel construction site is inevitably associated with Maramu, which, since the 1980s, has been offering large, perfectly tested and reliable travel boats. And for many boaters, this prestigious name in shipbuilding is synonymous with quality construction, solidity and a certain conservatism in its technical choices.

Amel is not in the trend, but in the sure values.

A few years ago, the shipyard began renewing its range, to better adapt to new market habits. And it's a success, like the Amel 50 released 2 years ago and named "European yacht of the year 2018" in the Luxury Cruiser category (40 units sold).

With the Amel 60 they are responding to their customers' request for a similar concept in a larger boat.

Easy, solid, comfortable and refined

In recent years, new electrical and hydraulic systems (such as winches or thrusters) have made large yachts accessible even to small crews.

The Amel 60 has sea travel in its DNA. In spite of its imposing size, it is truly designed for a couple adept at ocean cruising. Indeed, the owners are often couples who dream of sailing on the open sea and in the greatest comfort. They are looking for a second home.

For Amel, the specifications are based on ease of use, solidity and absolute comfort, both at sea and in port.

These sailboats claim the quality of a production sailboat. Stéphanie Rullier justifies the approach by specifying: "By avoiding customization, we ensure perfect knowledge of the boat and therefore its optimization. If the technical decisions are made by the shipyard, aesthetic customizations are obviously possible through the choice of woodwork and the number of berths."

The genesis of the AMEL 60

Stéphanie Rullier explains that " For a number of clients, the Amel 50 was a real success, but they thought it was too small, while the Amel 64 seemed too old. They were waiting for a large sailboat as modern as the Amel 50."

By taking the ingredients of the success of its little brother, the Amel 60 is a continuity in the evolution of the range.

With this 60', the shipyard offers a travel yacht with more equipment and fittings, while maintaining the high level of finishing required by the customers of this yacht.

A modern sailboat

The architect Olivier Racoupeau is responsible for the design of the AMEL 60. This yacht has a modern hull, extrapolated from that of its little brother. By being wider in its aft sections, the hull offers more space and a better stability of form. Its width requires double rudders for a good control of the boat in navigation. In terms of modern technical choices, the sloop rig is used instead of the ketch. The furling mast is made of carbon. The choice of this material is explained by its long term solidity for a lower weight than aluminum. Thus, by reducing the weight of the rig, we lower the center of gravity. And everything that limits roll and pitch increases comfort at sea and at anchor.

Still on deck, we can observe the design work of the central cockpit so characteristic of an Amel. The helm station and the central cockpit are extremely well protected, while freeing up space for a comfortable sundeck at the rear of the deck.

A contemporary and marine interior design

Isabelle Racoupeau signed the interior design. The first observation is that the interior is bright and modern. Everything seems to be well thought out for navigation, like the rounded corners of the furniture and the judiciously placed handrails. The distribution of the layout follows the fundamental principles of the Amel 50.

The very large owner's cabin at the rear has a level of equipment and finish in line with market requirements. In the passageway, there is a long galley on the starboard side, opposite a real technical hold. In the saloon, the chart table is located on the port side and the lounge occupies the entire width of this large boat. For guests, there are two symmetrical and spacious cabins in the bow, each with a bathroom.

The size of the boat makes it possible to offer more comfort and electronic equipment, for example a dishwasher in series, ditto for the arrangements and the load capacity.

Launching program and official presentation

The AMEL 60 will be in the water in June 2019. After a period of preparation and validation of equipment in July, it will sail to make the first images under sail.

Then, a trip around Spain will be the opportunity to test in situ the potential and reliability of the boat. As such, the employees of the Amel shipyard will have the opportunity to test their boat in real conditions. This is a guarantee of quality for the production of the series.

And finally, it will be officially presented at the Cannes exhibition in world premiere

The base price of the Amel 60 is 1,520,000 euros excluding VAT. The shipyard offers a very complete level of standard equipment. "Typically, customers only add 10 to 15 percent extra expense for options." concludes Stéphanie.
