Zurn 60 Powercat, the motor catamaran that challenges codes

Zurn 60 Powercat

Zurn Yacht Design will build the Zurn 60 Powercat for the American shipyard New England Boatworks. This 20-metre motor catamaran is distinguished by its unusual distribution of space on board. With a concentrated layout on the main and upper deck, the hulls are reduced for better performance.

More comfort and privacy

Today, boat owners are looking for maximum comfort and space on board for long sea trips. A request to which the catamaran perfectly meets. However, in recent months, new designs have flourished in the motor catamaran: a two-storey layout of living spaces that leaves the hulls free for almost any layout. After the Amasea Yachts, a new brand of power catamarans Here is the Zurn 60 Powercat, an 18.57 m (60 feet) motor catamaran.

Following a request from an owner used to long cruises, the American design firm will build this new type of catamaran designed to provide maximum privacy for guests and crew alike.

A main deck reserved for sleeping accommodation

Thus, this new type of development begins at the main bridge. On the Zurn 60 Powercat it is reserved for the night zone. At the front, the owner's cabin is installed over the full width of the boat (7.65 m) with a 270° field of view allowed by the small front windows and the two large side windows.

Access is from a door on the starboard side. There is a king-size bed in the centre, but also a sofa, a desk along the rear wall, as well as a workspace for navigation or business. On each side, a staircase leads to the two hulls that house the comfortable bathrooms: dressing room, washbasin with mirror, a toilet and a separate shower.

At the rear, there are four guest cabins with sea views and two separate beds (double beds can be installed as an option). To maximize privacy, the design studio works on insulating partitions that reduce noise. Many storage spaces are available for long cruises. Like the owner's cabin, each guest cabin has its own bathroom, also installed in the hulls with toilet and separate shower.

These two sleeping areas - owners and guests - are separated by a technical room that houses the water heaters or watermaker. Engines and generators are isolated at the rear in a specific room to reduce noise as much as possible.

"Having an owner's cabin on the main deck on a 20 m cruise ship is innovative. It was the Zurn 60 Powercat's cruise program that made this revolution possible." explains Zurn.

The position of the cabins on the main deck is not only intended to offer a superb view, but also to reduce the shape of the hulls. Thus the water inlets are fine to guarantee efficiency and performance as well as a draught of less than 1.22 m.

An upper deck designed as the main living space

The upper deck - the skylounge - is therefore the main living area of the boat. Light floods in through the many windows and the inverted windshield. It can be accessed from the main deck, either via a staircase in front of the cockpit or from a staircase behind the owner's cabin

From this area, the skipper can sail while participating in the life of the boat. The steering station is located forward to starboard with two helm seats and a large dashboard. On the port side - facing each other - there is a lounge area with an L-shaped sofa and table. At the rear, on either side of the staircase leading to this level, there is a fully equipped galley on the starboard side with an external workspace for passing dishes, for example. On the port side, the dining room can accommodate 8 people at the table. Finally, a toilet on the starboard side completes the list of fittings.

On the aft, the external deck can be arranged according to the owner's wishes: dining room, dance floor, sports hall..

Two outdoor living spaces on the main deck

Back on the main deck, the cockpit is well protected by the extension of the roof of the upper deck. There is a new lounge area, extended by a large hydraulic bathing platform - with fenced access - that can accommodate an outboard tender. Finally, the front cockpit, which is accessed via wide gangways, receives a U-shaped sofa with a table and bimini protection.

Powered by a pair of 435 horsepower Volvo Penta IPS600s, the Zurn 60 Powercat is expected to sail at 18 knots and reach 23 knots in top speed, with a range of 500 miles at 18 knots.
