Interview / Fortune rigging and a new start for Luke Berry

After his dismasting of his boat in the "Le défi Atlantique" race. Luke Berry gives us his testimony, he talks about the immediate future and how he will bounce back with his Class40 Lamotte Creation Module.

How do you feel after such an accident?

"Obviously, the first feeling about this damage is disappointment for the entire crew. We were in a very good position: 2 And suddenly, the mast fell off! at the time of the facts and property decided to go and titillate first. The atmosphere was excellent and we were happy to go on the Atlantic attack together.

What are the repercussions after this dismasting?

I am already thinking of all the consequences that this dismasting will have:

  • The return by cargo ship,
  • The search for a new mast,
  • Understand why this dismasting: in principle the mast is not supposed to fall if the tack fails.
  • Have to adapt the season's program,
  • Find a solution to be able to handle the partner navigations of May,
  • get back in the water as soon as possible to be able to participate in the next races of the season

... In short, a thousand and one questions that have time to arise during the time of the return trip to the coast and to which we will have to find an answer quickly.

What was the outcome of this dismasting?

Fortunately, there are four of us and morale is rising quickly: it could have happened in the middle of the Atlantic, much further from the coast (already 240 miles under jury rigging, it's a long time...) or on the eve of the Transat Jacques Vabre, endangering the main race of the season.

The most important thing is that there are no injuries and we have secured the boat. We're going to do everything we can to bring the boat back and bounce back!

We arrived in Pointe-à-Pitre two days after the dismasting, the insurance expert was waiting for us at the dock. I keep making phone calls right and left to organize the rest, to make the insurance work, to find a new mast.

We will return to Guadeloupe at the end of April to put the boat on a cargo ship in Martinique towards Southampton, England." Luke Berry understood this well and knows that sailing is a motor sport.

"Beware of the one who takes a step back, it's sometimes to gain momentum." Luke says, before adding, "I am lucky to have loyal partners and a three-year project. This is part of the risks of the job and we will continue this beautiful project that we have been carrying out with passion and professionalism for a year and a half.

For Luke and his Class 40 Lamotte - Creation Module the next objective of the season is the Transat Jacques Vabre in doubles which will start at the end of October in Le Havre. And the skipper is already looking forward to getting back on the water to train and fight with the best Class40s on the circuit!
