Clément and Marjolaine, two young thirty-somethings who are challenging themselves to leave for a year for a tour of the Atlantic. If the subject has already been covered many times, if the route is in no way exotic, if the sailboat is not huge, the story can be read pleasantly.
Because Clément tells it with a lot of humour and precision. With its verve, we experience sailing as well as stopovers with a lot of details when it is necessary to specify it and quickly pass over non-events.
These two captains - as Clément points out on the first page of the book - have decided to go on a Dehler 34. A serial sailboat from 1992. The choice of this sailboat is not neutral, because it is more a race-cruise unit than a bulky long- cruising sailboat. Throughout the year, this choice of "a sailboat sailing" has paid off. While it is common to say that in long cruises, you always sail downwind, there are many arrivals or passages between the islands that require you to sail upwind.
This book, which chronicles the whole year from the departure from Le Havre to the return to the same port, is completed by a very instructive review for those who one day imagine casting off to take off to sea. Human assessment (physical and mental), technical assessment, ecological assessment, but also (and especially) financial assessment. Everything is noted, calculated and detailed for this Atlantic tour carried out between 2016 and 2017. It was this assessment that made Clément want to publish his book: "I compiled all the factual elements that I would have liked to read before the start," he points out.
Initially intended for the circle of friends and close family, these chronicles are finally very pleasant to read. I was probably particularly sensitive, because Passmoilcric followed the same road I took a few years ago. The stories allowed me to relive the stops with pleasure. But any reader who loves the sea, especially if he plans to go on a long cruise, will enjoy immersing himself in this story.
