Simrad Cruise, an entry-level plotter that surprises

Simrad Cruise on trial in Palma de Mallorca © Bateaux.com

Simrad is launching its Cruise range for boat lovers who are not fishermen and who are not looking for a high-performance sounder, but rather a versatile all-rounder, good in all areas. We were able to test this aircraft off Palma (Balearic Islands) to discover its ease of use and efficiency.

Available in 3 screen sizes (5, 7 and 9 inches diagonal), the Simrad Cruise plotter is a complete device on which no other devices can be added. If it integrates a GPS and a sonar unit, it will not be possible to network it or connect a radar, for example. But this configuration, which seems basic, finally meets more than 80% of boaters' expectations: a simple device on which to rely.

Ideal for small motor boats

Delivered ready to operate, with its transom transducer, the Cruise plotter is designed to be installed on the consoles of motor boats (open or semi-rigid hull) for all boaters who want to enjoy the day at sea without having to read the user manual before each departure.

A keyboard to access the menus

To simplify handling (and price...), the Cruise range does not have a touch screen. Just a keyboard on the right of the device that gives access to the different functions. The main display shows 6 programmed functions. It will not be possible to imagine others.

This includes mapping, sonar and a navigation screen. The 3 additional icons are combinations of the first solutions by splitting the screen in 2. it's basic, but devilishly effective. Indeed, with the Cruise, you don't have any questions about the information to be displayed, the menus, the settings. Simrad's team thought it for you!

Mapping, navigation and sounder

It is in its mapping function that the device is most efficient. The screen displays the map (Navionics or C-Map depending on the one in the reader) with on the right a display of the data (heading, speed, depth...) useful for navigation. Without a touch screen, it is a little more tedious to position waypoints, but the very intuitive menus make it easier to use.

The navigation page gives the heading (in the form of a compass at the top of the screen), the route to the next waypoint and other route information (time, heading, distance...). It's ideal when you have to go to a point. The pilot of the motor boat then has all the useful information for his navigation.

Simrad Cruise

Even if the Cruise was first and foremost designed as a chartplotter, it carries a powerful sonar unit with it. Indeed, it has a CHIRP sounder with an 83/200 kHz probe to provide a very detailed image of the bottom and fish.

Not even expensive!

Plug and play for installation and operation, this Cruise plotter does not have much to blame. Not even its very competitive price. Just can we blame the price of electronic cards (about 200 ? for a zone) which represents half the price of the device... A budget to be taken into consideration when you buy a Cruise.
