Garmin Echomap Ultra, a war machine for fishermen

Aimed primarily at fishermen, Garmin has just launched the EchoMap Ultra handset. This device has all the features offered by the brand, including connectivity to Panoptix probes without the need for a black box.

The EchoMap Ultra comes with a 10 or 12 inch diagonal screen (21.7 x 13.6 cm screen in 10 inches). This screen is multi-touch, but also has a simplified keyboard for quick access.

This device is above all intended for fishermen who will find all the functions useful for their activity. Cartography is provided by two microSD card readers that can receive BlueChart cartography integrating Navionics data. It is also possible to create your own custom cartography by registering your probes. Bathymetric curves are plotted before your eyes. By customizing the colors (for example, by turning the 3.50 to 4.50 m area red) you can choose to navigate only in that area if that's where it bites.

One CHIRP probe as standard

The Garmin EchoMap Ultra comes with a GT54UHD probe. This CHIRP probe provides a traditional 2D view, as well as a very high definition ClearVü and SideVü scanned view. By combining these views in multiple windows, you can see the nature of the bottom, any branches or obstructions on the bottom, and spawning fish. The side view allows you to explore all around the boat.

Adapted scrolling

On a fishfinder, what is happening in a snapshot under the probe is on the right side of the screen, the rest of the image is just a scrolling history. In fact, if you stop with the boat, the history continues to scroll. On the EchoMap Ultra this scrolling is proportional to the boat speed. The reading is therefore much clearer and above all much more representative of reality.

Panoptix LiveScope compatible

The EchoMap Ultra can connect directly (without black box) to the Panoptix LiveScope probe. This probe gives a live image of the bottom. You can see a fish entering the cone of detection, and see it moving before it comes out from under the boat. This probe with a cone of about 90° can be positioned with a downward view or by looking forward. This is very useful for pelagic prospecting since you can see the fish before you are above it. This gives you time to turn off the engine and cast your lure before passing over.

A clever stirrup

The EchoMap Ultra is delivered with a bracket that allows you to remove the screen in no time at all. All the probes remain connected to the clamp while the contact with the screen is made through a large waterproof plug. Quick and easy..

Wifi and NMEA

In terms of connectivity, the EchoMap Ultra has integrated Wifi that will allow sharing with mobile phones via the (free) ActiveCaptain application. These devices can be networked and have NMEA 2000 inputs/outputs to ensure compatibility with an autopilot, electronic compass or engine data.
