The apology of light sailing to learn sailing

In the 1980s, light sailing was a huge success. Unlike the habitable sailboat, which requires expertise in navigation and a large budget, the light sail is accessible and easy. However, it now has a very sporty image, whereas it is possible to envisage sailing for an entire weekend or taking coastal raids by light sail.

A small monocoque support

To start sailing well, support is essential. Choose a small, stable monohull, Optimist or dinghy type, equipped with a sail and rudder. The Laser will also be suitable, but less stable, it will be more sporty.

Example: Optimist, Vaurien, Laser or Walker Bay

Technically simple

A small boat is technically simple to sail alone, with all the controls in hand. It is the best way to confront problems and solve them yourself, unlike the habitable. Indeed, when sailing on a habitable sailboat, there is often a competent crew to accompany us and advise us on the attitude to adopt. In Optimist, we are alone in choosing the right strategy.

Close to the elements

When sailing a dinghy, you are more likely to feel the forces at work. We will feel the gite, the pressure in the rudder or the sound of water on the hull, a sign of speed.

Wind space and position in the wind space

All boats face the wind, but in a small boat, you can try more things. On a large boat, the support requires much more effort, unlike in an Optimist, where little effort is required to manoeuvre.

Missing a dinghy turn will have less impact than a 40-foot turn with a 40 m2 genoa. Intuitively, the small boat solves many problems.

The price

Smaller boats are much more affordable than habitable sailboats, and there are many of them on the second-hand market. Easy to store, a trailer will suffice to store them in a garden or garage. No need for a port space couteuse?!

Federator

The Optimist or dinghy are transgenerational. Easy to learn, everyone can try sailing on board, from grandparents, to grandchildren, to parents.

Close to the coasts and guaranteed sensations

With a small boat, you don't have to go very far to sail, you can do it only 20 m from the beach. In the same way, no need to go fast to feel sensations. An adult can already feel it with acceleration.

Lightweight leisure sail

No need to be an expert, nor a sportsman to indulge in light sailing, you can learn easily from the age of 7. You can practice as a hobby, without any notion of competition. It is a popular and family sport.
