Towed vehicle, what regulations for buoys?

Buoys or other inflatable bananas are devices towed by boats that allow you to have fun on the water. But their use is subject to regulations. Indeed, towed equipment enters Division 240, which regulates ship safety.

  • The practice of towed water activities is exclusively during the day.
  • It must be practiced beyond the 300 m shoreline and within 2 miles of a shelter.
  • The towing boat must display a 2-metre orange fluorescent flame placed at a height sufficient to ensure visibility.
  • All towed persons must wear brightly coloured lifejackets. A 50 Newton vest minimum.
  • Like vests, the trailer (rope) must be bright and floating in colour.
  • The towed vehicle or buoy must be of a bright colour that can be easily identified. The tug must have a quick release system for the trailer.
  • The towing vessel must be able to carry on board all towed persons, in addition to its crew, and have adequate access (bathing ladder to get back on board).
  • At least two persons must be present on board the towing vessel. One must be dedicated to the conduct of the vessel and the other to the supervision of towed persons and possible emergency manoeuvres (she must always look back to warn the pilot). The latter person must be of age to obtain a driving licence for motor vessels (minimum 16 years old)
  • A holder of the State Water Ski Instructor's Certificate may operate the towed motor vessel and supervise the towed gear(s) alone, provided that the towed vessel is equipped with a rear-view mirror and has a circuit breaker.
