40 years at the helm, memories of a nautical journalist

Bernard Rubinstein began his career as a nautical journalist after embarking with Eric Tabarly, and recounts his professional career in a book. In 40 anecdotes, the journalist paints us 60 years of pleasure, since his childhood with the discovery of the sea, to his last find found in a bric-a-brac.

I have often said and repeated over and over again that "nautical journalist is the most beautiful profession in the world". Bernard Rubinstein's souvenir book is proof of this. This "young man" punctuates his career (he certainly does not want to conclude it!) with a book that relates 40 years of reporting at sea.

Bernard Rubinstein, known as "Rubi", is above all a lover of the great outdoors. His whole life has been turned to the open sea. I had the chance to meet him on reports. This gruff little man who doesn't let go of his pipe to talk when he's ashore, becomes jovial and displays happiness on his face as soon as he finds himself on a boat, preferably a sailboat.

He has had the opportunity to try out boats for 40 years now that he has been scouring all the ports in the world. Journalist in some major French nautical magazines (Neptune and Voile Magazine for the main ones), he had the opportunity to use his oilskins on all cockpits of yacht production.

His technique for reporting? Take lots of notes. It is equipped with small format notebooks that he constantly blackens, that he finds inspiration for his articles. I imagine him immersing himself in these notebooks, wisely archived, to relive the reports of his life, to bring them together in this souvenir book. Here, he tells us about the construction of these chronicles, adding anecdotes to them.

If the book recounts his professional life, it remains pleasant to read, because Rubi highlights the encounters and characters that have forged his pleasure. Thus it will be a lighthouse keeper, an offshore runner or a simple representative of a shipyard who will cross its wake. In the yachting industry he knows them all, he has been around them all at one time or another on the sandstone of a pontoon or a dock.

Beautifully illustrated, very rich, this book is aimed at all young and old boaters, who will see the evolution of our environment through the eyes of the journalist. And don't think you'll find any "it was better before", because Rubi is still as much in love with the sea as ever and continues to share this passion.
