Aqua, the first hydrogen-powered superyacht

Sinot Yacht's superyacht Aqua

Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design took advantage of the Monaco Yacht Show, the major yachting boat show, to unveil its new superyacht concept, called Aqua. This 112 m superyacht will run on hydrogen or fuel cell - one of the cleanest fuels in use but also one of the most expensive because the implementation is complex.

A hydrogen yacht

"Aqua will be fully powered by hydrogen, a unique concept that represents a significant step forward in the search for a new balance between nature and technology" explains the designer.

This system is based on the use of liquefied hydrogen (dihydrogen) stored under vacuum at -253°C in two 28-tonne tanks. The latter is then converted into electrical energy by proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, producing only water and no greenhouse gases.

This hydrogen system will power the electrical system, which in turn will be used for propulsion, auxiliary systems and hotel services (life on board). Large batteries will provide the energy requirement.

An operational project capable of competing with the highest standards

Developed in collaboration with Lateral Naval Architects, Aqua is now operational. " This project, which required five months of intensive development, is reliable and secure, with proven technology" explains the designer in charge of the project, Sander Sinot.

With an announced speed of 17 knots and a range of 3750 miles, it will be able to compete with its peers in terms of size, performance and operation. Thanks to its electric propulsion, Aqua will be very quiet, with little noise or vibration.

"Aqua exceeds current superyacht standards. It optimizes hull, energy and space efficiency while offering a maximum superyachting experience, with the highest level of comfort for the most demanding" explains the design firm.

For the design, Sander Sinot sought to create a "extraordinary design" in correlation with the developed hydrogen electric system.

A world of intimacy and space

The owner's living space will be "spectacular" Very spacious and wide and installed on the front half of the upper deck for more privacy. The various living spaces - open - will be delimited by finely crafted wooden partitions offering privacy and subdued lighting.

To port and starboard, the floor-to-ceiling glazing will provide an impression of openness and freedom. The superstructure - whose height under the beam varies from 2.80 m to 3.80 m at the level of the large central skylight - is reinforced by a complex wooden structure.

The owner's room is located in the axis of the yacht and offers an endless panoramic view to the Aqua room located at the front. This fully glazed high room offers an incredible view of the horizon. The owner's part consists of a large bathroom, a dressing room and a private spa area.

Located near the beach club, the VIP cabins offer a spacious layout and very elaborate furniture. These luxurious and comfortable spaces are furnished in a minimalist Japanese style.

The wellness centre offers a space where the waves of the sea are reflected. There is a hydromassage room, a yoga area, a training room and a huge access to the gym which has an opening on the ocean.

Located in the heart of the superyacht, the spectacular circular staircase is one of the main features of the boat, connecting the upper deck to the lower deck. At this point, at the rear of the boat, there is a real spectacle: two large hexagon-shaped liquefied hydrogen tanks protected by a giant reinforced glass facade.

An incredible glass bow

The ship's outer lines are inspired by the swell, induced by winds and currents. The upper deck is characterized by a sensational bow with an observation room integrated in the bow, the Aqua room. The ship has a double hull interspersed with glazing with a clear separation between the front and rear, open to the sea. With its raised front lines and five decks, Aqua offers a huge living space, but also technical spaces.
