Garmin is closely interested in ocean racing

A specialist in marine electronics, Garmin has never really entered the field of sailing racing. This has now been done with the partnership with Jérémie Beyou's Team Charal. An association that should make it possible to develop products towards more veiled functions.

Many sailing skippers wear the Garmin Quatix watch on their wrists. Without it being a partnership, François Gabart, Franck Cammas, Jérémie Beyou and many others use it both on the water, but also during their sports training on land. Indeed this watch which integrates a GPS also makes it possible to record heartbeats with a sensor directly integrated under the watch. A single watch for all activities on water or on land!

Jérémie Beyou discovered the use of this model during his participation in the Volvo Ocean Race. Since then, she hasn't left her wrist since. It was therefore natural for this skipper and his new IMOCA Charal to want to install Garmin electronics on board.

? Team Beyou Racing has been a Garmin Marine customer for many years, in particular by equipping our fleet with semi-rigid track markers. So I am very familiar with the advantages and technological progress of Garmin. "says Jérémie Beyou.

At the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre 2019, IMOCA received a radar, a plotter, an AIS transponder, a fixed VHF and an InReach beacon. After the transatlantic race, the large GNX 120 and 130 screens will also be distributed throughout the boat. As Garmin is not present in this field, only the autopilot was not chosen in this brand.

Garmin is officially setting foot in ocean racing through this partnership and wishes to develop its products with dedicated functions for sailing. Some already exist (lay lines, regatta start assistance, wind display and calculation...), but new ones should be launched.
