Contest 55CS, an offshore cruiser that is becoming more modern

The 55CS Contest

The Dutch manufacturer Contest Yachts will launch its new Contest 55CS model in January 2020. The latter uses the modernity codes discovered on the two previous models, the Contest 85CS and 67CS.

A 3rd more modern model

In line with the Contest 85 CS and 67 CS - 26 and 21 m long respectively - the Dutch manufacturer Contest Yachts is launching the Contest 55 CS in January 2020, designed by German designers Judel/Vrolijk & Co.

This new 17 m long model is an offshore cruiser that adapts to the different desires of the owners: long-distance cruising, comfort is habitable for idleness at anchor or daily life in the port.

Moving closer to current standards

For this very conservative project, Contest Yachts is approaching modern standards, which have been in force for several years, particularly in France. As a result, the lines are a little tighter and the hull more powerful. The objective is to offer a boat with an honourable performance under sail, from light to strong wind.

The almost vertical bow extends the length at the waterline compared to the old models, and the master beam is further back to give more power to the hull. Finally, the yard has chosen to integrate a bowsprit without a beard - to facilitate mooring - on this new model, which will make it possible to envisage sailing under spinnaker.

According to the manufacturer, the injection technique was used to build the Contest 55CS. Exposed structures will be reduced by using a little carbon fibre in some structural parts, thus providing more interior space.

The Contest 55CS will be a boat that is ergonomically safe, so as to make it seaworthy (handrails, etc.). The finishes are meticulously finished with rich woodwork and top-of-the-range materials and fabrics.

Indirect light

To modernize the style of his cruise ship - a less cellar-like interior - the builder emphasizes light with deck and hull glazing. The latter are reduced to two as standard - in the aft cabin and saloon - but can be increased - optionally - to 4 - in the kitchen and front cabin.

Inside, the owner has a panoramic glass in his cabin installed on the rear wall. Thus, when the transom is deployed, it should have a view of the ocean. Many interior design options are available on site.

A deck plan for navigation or idleness

The ergonomic deck layout makes it easy to move around the deck. At the rear, there are two cockpits, one reserved for guests with benches and table and the other reserved for navigation with two wheel steering. Many options are also available to optimise navigation: carbon or aluminium mast, cutter or sloop rigging, furling mast or furling boom system or furling system on the bowsprit for the downwind gennaker.

For idleness, the Contest 55CS offers a beautiful sunbathing beach at the back that can be transformed into a bed by adding many cushions. Finally, the hydraulic platform invites you to swim.
