Bought almost two years ago by Fountaine Pajot, Dufour presents the Dufour 530 at the beginning of 2020. While it retains the distinctive elements of the range, it also introduces some interesting new features.

A first model since the acquisition

The Dufour 530 is the first of a series of three new models to be launched in the next year and a half (during 2020/2021). But above all, it is the first boat presented since Dufour was taken over by the group Fountaine Pajot. The design is still by Umberto Felci, but it has been slightly modified, especially on the back, gaining in width.

A large, well-designed cockpit

This 50-foot model - 16.30 m overall length and 4.99 m m midship beam - offers a nice cockpit area. At the front, the layout is classic with two benches and a central table. At the rear, the two helm stations have removable benches. In the lowered position, they secure the cockpit as well as allowing comfortable sailing. Then simply lift them up to access the large bathing platform and enjoy the swim. It is also possible to cook here thanks to the outdoor kitchen with plancha and sink, one of the characteristics of the Dufour family.

As an option, a central sunbathing area can be installed between the two steering wheels. This installation is a good idea to stay close to the skipper, especially with a small crew. It also offers additional storage space.

One of the beautiful new features of the cockpit is this step installed in front of the helm stations (which also acts as a tip locker) which allows easy access to the deck. It will also make a good support for manoeuvring the winches.

The roof offers an area dedicated to relaxation with a large sunbathing area, installed upstream of the numerous portholes and deck hatches that bring a lot of light inside.

3 versions for different programs

Depending on the owner's wishes and program, the Dufour 530 is available in 3 versions:

  • Easy for owners looking for simplicity and charter with a clear roof and manoeuvres reported on the coamings.
  • Ocean with a traditional manoeuvring plan, halyard and mainsail carriage manoeuvres on the roof and sheeting manoeuvres on the coamings.
  • Performance with the clew at the bottom of the cockpit, six winches and hydraulic backstay and boom vang. The mast and boom are extended, giving an increased surface area of 20 m2.

" The idea is to offer a maximum of possibilities to the owners, explains the designer. The market has evolved and we wanted to offer a comfortable boat, but one that also offers sensations when sailing. With these three different versions, we're targeting all markets by adapting to different ways of navigating."

A comfortable and cosy interior

Entering the Dufour 530, you can easily find the manufacturer's codes, starting with this two-part galley at the front of the boat. Spacious, it is equipped with all modern conveniences: fridge, freezer, gas cooker, oven, sink, etc. as well as numerous storage spaces.

The aft saloon is also spacious and very bright thanks to the numerous hull and deck windows. Sofa area to starboard with chart table and huge dining area to port with L-shaped bench seat and central bench seat. The layout is rather modern and designed for comfort. The proof is in these handrails installed at the level of the glazings and thought rather to close the curtains than to stand in navigation, its straight edges are not very suitable.

The companionway - whose door is electric - is well secured. If the first step is wide, the following ones are a little short, hence the importance of having these handrails on both sides of the descent.

At the rear, in the Ocean 3 cabins version we visited, there are two double cabins (one with a double bed and the other with two single beds). These are of good size and offer plenty of storage space and a dedicated bathroom with separate shower. As in other bathrooms, the height of the underbar is appreciable.

Finally, at the bow, behind the large galley is the large owner's cabin with a shower and a sink, and on the port side and starboard side there is a toilet. Once again, the space is bright thanks to the deck hatches. In total, the Dufour 530 can accommodate up to 6 cabins for a charter version, a remarkable layout on a 50-foot yacht.

Rather comfort than marine

While the interior of the Dufour 530 has been designed to offer maximum comfort when cruising - which is well done - the different floor heights are less appreciated, which brings a less seaworthy side to the boat. To access the aft cabins, it will be necessary to descend several steps. In the kitchen, if the furniture is once again designed for comfort, one may wonder about the weight estimate with all this equipment and especially the sink covers that are heavy to handle. While the manufacturer offers a Performance version of its 50-footer, the care taken in the layout makes it more suited to family cruising.
