The number of platforms for renting yachts between private individuals has multiplied in recent years. The posted prices are generally half the price of those of professional renters. Owners find it an interesting way to finance the maintenance of their boats. For the tenants, it is an opportunity to treat themselves to a holiday that was previously unattainable.

If the cost is lower, so are the guarantees. When we rent a sailboat to a private individual, we are not safe from unpleasant surprises. So it's better to anticipate them.
So here are three points to make sure before warming up the credit card:
1. Security
Safety on a ship rests on at least four pillars:
- mandatory regulatory armament
- additional safety equipment
- equipment maintenance
- the competence of the crew
The first three criteria are not dependent on the tenant. Legislation sets out a list of mandatory safety equipment on a sailboat. However, this is only a minimum. Each owner is free to complete it (and it is highly recommended).
Let's take harnesses and lanyards as an example. On a sailboat, this equipment is compulsory from the semi-offshore category (sailing up to 60 miles from a shelter). But, is there a point for attaching the carabiner of your lanyard on the boat? Indeed, the lifeline is not mandatory for a pleasure yacht.
The same goes for the AIS, which is not compulsory, but very reassuring during the crossing. As for the mooring line, will it be sufficient for your use? Finally in what state are the brassieres on the edge? Maybe it's better if you have your own..
2. The equipment
Depending on your sailing program, you may require anti-roll covers, or a high level of water, fuel and power autonomy.
If there are only a few of you to steer, a good autopilot will come in handy. Provided also that the capacity of the batteries is able to support its consumption.
3. Maintenance, the general condition of the yacht
Since 2019, owner-renters must keep a maintenance logbook for their boat. However, the state of wear of the sails and fittings will not be shown. Neither the saddlery nor the reliability of the electrical circuit or the toilet pump.
Steps to rent a sailboat to a private individual
- Before looking for a sailboat, establish your sailing program
- Take the 3 points mentioned above and list the equipment for the comfort you want to find on board.
- Look for a matching sailboat.
- Ask the owner for a rental estimate and especially for a complete inventory
- If possible, contact the previous tenants to get their opinion. Don't just rely on the notices posted on the online rental platform. Disgruntled people sometimes negotiate their negative opinions for a discount on the return.
- Ideally, start by renting only for a weekend. This will allow you to check all the above points yourself.
