Why choose a hard shell? advantages and disadvantages

On the motorboat market, two categories compete, rigid hulls and semi-rigid. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages.

A greater sense of security

With a much higher freeboard than a RIB, the rigid hull is reassuring for its occupants, especially the youngest. Its cockpit is often well protected and welcoming for safe sailing. However, when stationary, the rigid hull is less stable than a RIB, whose floats ensure a good balance.

A beautiful living space for more conviviality

Without floats that affect the width of the boat, the rigid hull offers more space on board. This means more space for the layout. There is often a saloon at the front and back, nice bench seats, a large console with several steering seats, a kitchenette and even a cabin for the largest models. This layout also allows for more conviviality.

The multiplicity of activities

The rigid hull lends itself to all types of nautical activities, whether it be cruising with the possibility of spending the night on board, towed sports with a roll bar or a ski pole, or fishing with rod holders integrated into the gunwales or a livewell. The sportiest models are also well suited for speeding.

Different designs

In the world of powerboats, designs are very different depending on the shipyard and the type of hull: open hull, helmsman, sport boat, runabout... Thus, everyone will be able to find a style that suits his taste.

A wider range of use

The semi-rigid is an open hull - except for the largest models equipped with a cabin - its use is therefore mainly limited to a day use in good weather. A rigid hull, such as a helmsman or a speedboat, will allow you to sail longer and protected whatever the weather.

Solidity

Built mostly in polyester, the rigid hull is robust and less fragile in the sense that unlike the semi-rigid, there is no risk of puncture of the floats. But this construction makes it heavier, as the floats are light. This additional weight will also make the rigid hull less easy to transport than a RIB of the same size.
