Ile de Sein, the meeting with Randy, the solitary dolphin

At the beginning of May, we stopped over on Sein Island before heading back down to Concarneau. We did more than a meeting, we played with Randy. Travel diary.

At anchor in front of the quay of the "Francais Libres", here is the story lived by boaters with Randy, a Dolphin, who also made a stopover in this jewel of nature that is the island of Sein.

They arrived the night before. Just enough time to inflate the dinghy to spend an evening celebrating the seasonal reopening of the Forzh Penaos and to taste some Rums from Marie-Galante, another of the most beautiful French islands. After a short night and a sumptuous sunrise bathing the town in an orange color, all that remains is to have a coffee on a terrace before a long sail in the calm.

A shock in a train.

First shock, the tide is high. A second shock, but not a shock as usual when you arrive on the shore and your oars touch the ground, no a light shock without depth. We lower our head overboard when a large dark mass passes under our fragile boat.

At the time, when you see a black mass of 2,5m passing under a dinghy in relative balance, it is a good stress before understanding.

It is Randy, a male dolphin who presents a scar, a kind of notch, easily identifiable on his dorsal fin which invites itself to the game. Each time the oar swims, Randy gives a blow of head there.

You feel the strength and precision of the dolphin, all it would take is a little headbutt on the dinghy for it to tip over. The dolphin accompanied me for 150 meters, circling around and under me, looking for the game. It was an unforgettable moment.

In the channel, Randy was playing with hawsers only a few meters from the quay in front of the amazed eyes of a dozen of walkers. The dolphin gave himself in show as if he had understood that we were privileged guests to his representation
