Catherine Chabaud, journalist and committed navigator

Catherine Chabaud is a sailor, known as the first woman to have completed a solo, non-stop round the world voyage. Very involved in ecology and entrusted with missions by the Ministry of Ecology, she is currently working on the Sailboat of the Future project.

An accomplished journalist

Born in November 1962 (52 years old), she began her journalistic career after training at the IPJ. She collaborates with several supports, but remains a lover of sailing and a fervent defender of the environment, involved in sustainable development. She was once editor-in-chief of Thalassa magazine and has produced several reports on sustainable development. From 2002 to 2005, she hosted a programme on adventure on Europe 1, then wrote a column on Environment and Sustainable Development on the same radio station from 2005 to 2007. In parallel, she has also written several books, including Possible dreams in 1997, which won the prize for the best sports book of the year.

An outstanding navigator

Since 2002, she is no longer a professional sailor, but she continues to sail as an amateur, double or crewed boat.

A committed woman

Today, Catherine Chabaud is involved in many environmental causes and is part of organizations where she brings a true expert's eye. Thus, it is part of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council and participates in the work of the Environment section. It also makes it possible to be a true spokesperson for the Sea and to raise awareness of its importance. Since 2010, she has also been a member of the Board of Directors of the Société Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer and has been supporting the SNSM on the Mer en Sécurité project, in collaboration with Chantal Plessier d'Auvergne.

She also collaborates on several projects, always focused on sustainable development. The NavEcoMat project, led by the University of Lorient, has given birth to a canoe made of flax fibre and potato resin. This first boat is made of bio-based composite materials.

It is also part of the ECONAV network, which brings together stakeholders in the nautical sector, interested in eco-navigation, green products for the nautical sector, etc. Finally, it is committed to Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque, which operates on children suffering from heart defects and who cannot be treated in their countries due to lack of equipment.

Invested with missions for the Ministry of Ecology, member of the Grenelle de la Mer, she is currently working on the Sailboat of the Future project, for which she is organizing a fundraising campaign Discover the Sailboat of the Future project SI HUGO A R?VÉ SON ÉCUME DE MER POUR PARTIR EN GRANDE CROISIÈRE, CELA NE L'EMPÊCHE PAS DE NAVIGUER SUR D'AUTRES VOILIERS. In 2006, Catherine Chabaud was awarded the title of Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur and Chevalier de l'ordre national du Mérite and in 2009 she was awarded the Chevalier de l'ordre du Mérite maritime.
