Maritime beaconing, lateral beaconing marks

These red or green marks mainly concern port or channel entrances.

To enter a channel, you are considered to be coming from the sea (and heading for land). Lateral marks mark the route to follow with port and starboard marks.

ATTENTION the buoyage is managed by the International Association of Maritime Signals (IALA). This association has divided the world into 2 zones A and B. The A buoyage is used all over the world except on :

  • the American continent
  • the West Indies
  • japan
  • korea
  • the Philippines

In the B zones, the marks are reversed.

TO REMEMBER :

  • The system of lateral marks is interpreted when coming from the sea and entering the harbor.
  • A mnemonic for remembering the side marker:

    " Bottom if red and green knit "

    Babôrd Red Cylinder and Starboard Green Cone

Port side markings

Color: red

Indicator: cylinder

Light: red of any rhythm

Starboard side markings

Color: green

Indicator: green cone

Light: green of any rhythm
