Maritime beaconing, special markings

In coastal marking, special marks are used to mark information mentioned in the Sailing Directions.

The special marks can be of 2 types :

  • enduring
  • casual

Colour yellow
Indicator (if it exists) yellow'X' shape
Fire (if it exists) yellow at any rate

Special durable brands

They are used to permanently mark areas mentioned in sailing instructions:

  • sewer ports
  • channelling
  • material deposit
  • exercise area
  • wire ropes
  • pipelines
  • ...

They are distinguished by their yellow colour and their X-shaped light

Occasional special brands

They are used to mark areas:

  • beaconing to protect swimmers
  • marking of the 300 m band
  • regatta courses or other water sports
  • ...

For greater clarity, they may include pictograms (anchorage prohibited, engine prohibited...).

They are yellow in colour, but have no indicators.
