Matt Chem, tips for cleaning and maintaining the fabrics of a boat

Fabrics on a boat require careful maintenance. They are subject to harsh treatment due to the salty environment, bad weather and U.V. rays. The materials used on board are various: cotton, synthetic fibres or plastic-coated (skai), each of which has a specific treatment for their maintenance.

The sails

Modern sails are made of synthetic fibres. Cruising sails are mostly made of polyester (or Dacron). Sails made of carbon, Mylar or Kevlar are used on regatta (competition) yachts.

Cleaning a sail is a delicate operation. Indeed, sails are very resistant to weather and UV, but sensitive to acid and strongly alkaline cleaners.

Be careful, you have to clean without rubbing! It is strongly advised never to rub a sail, otherwise the fibre, the covering and the seams will be damaged.

The solution for cleaning a sail is to work by immersion, i.e. soaking. The constraint is to find a tank big enough to contain the sail. Some boaters will use their dinghy, a large tank or their bathtub...

SLICKY is a powder renovator from MATT CHEM. It renovates sails by immersion. A 500 ml jar of SLICKY can treat about 10m2 of sails. It is the activation of the powder with lukewarm water that potentiates the action of the product. The effervescence created activates the washing and bleaching agents.

Place your sail in the container, taking care that the entire sail is well impregnated. Leave to soak for 12 hours. SLICKY will dissolve dirt, mould, mildew, insects, rubbing or grease and remove the dull film. Then simply rinse off. The work is finished without damaging your sail.

Awnings, condoms and biminis

Boat covers are made from weather and UV resistant fabrics. These fabrics, although of high quality, get dirty. Their longevity is also subject to the care that you will take in terms of maintenance and storage.

There are some simple rules to follow that will help you increase the life of your awnings:

  • Never fold and store a boat cover if it is wet
  • Regularly remove soiling
  • Never use a high pressure cleaner (Karcher) to clean it
  • Never put an awning in the washing machine

It is very important to avoid cleaning the awnings with a hard brush or with too aggressive cleaners that could damage the fabric weave and the waterproof film. MATT CHEM has developed COTTON KLINE, a gentle shampoo that is easy to use and, once diluted, makes the awning clean without any alteration.

COTTON KLINE is used as follows:

Spread the fabric on a flat surface. Moisten the textile with clear water. Prepare the COTTON KLINE solution (5 to 10 capfuls of product in 5 litres of water). Brush the fabric with a soft brush with rounded edges and leave the solution to act for a few minutes. Care must be taken not to crush the brush bristle on the surface of the fabric. Rinse thoroughly. Repeat the operation on the second side of the textile. Then hang the dampening or protective cover until it is perfectly dry.

Mould and mildew

For punctual mould punctures that may occur, it is not necessary to treat the entire surface of the fabric. STOP MOISI mould stain remover acts locally. Simply spray the product, leave it to work and rinse.

To re-waterproof

Over time, fabric awnings lose their waterproof quality. The waterproof film fades and no longer acts as a barrier against rain and spray...

The I.B.S. waterproofing agent redeposits a waterproofing barrier. It also has a film-forming effect preventing dust and dirt from becoming embedded. I.B.S. is always used in its pure and cold state on a clean and dry surface. Spray I.B.S finely and evenly in cross layers 20 cm from the substrate. Allow to dry in the open air. Protect surfaces from rain for 5 to 6 hours while drying

Coverage: 4 m2 / 500 ml

Outdoor seating and sunbathing

Skai, vinyl or synthetic leather are all terms for marine plastics used for upholstery. These plastics are fragile and therefore require special care, otherwise they will tarnish or become sticky. The use of petroleum solvents is to be banned for their cleaning.

MATT CHEM offers SUPCLEAN, a vegetable-based shampoo that restores a white colour to cushions without making them sticky. Simply apply SUPCLEAN with a soft scraping sponge, rub and rinse. It is not necessary to rinse thoroughly. SUPCLEAN does not attack the protective film of the leatherette or vinyl and therefore does not remove a stain that has been impregnated in the material for a very long time.

Rebellious stains on vinyls

For stubborn and heavily encrusted stains, KLINE SKAI plant solvent is more suitable. It removes the dull veil deposited on upholstery and quickly removes dirt such as gummed residues, carbon, sludge, greasy dirt, black streaks, mineral or vegetable oils and mould stains without rubbing! KLINE SKAI leaves a hydrophobic film on the treated surface which delays the incrustation of new dirt.

For the really old skai

Unfortunately, there are times when the best cleaners can no longer cope with stubborn stains and sun damage. MATT CHEM has developed a white stain for leatherette, vinyl, plastic and AB.S. The T.B. 28 is a real bluff or coup de neuf! It can be applied to used, sun-burned or unrecoverable stains on upholstery.

Be sure to shake the aerosol well before use to thoroughly mix the colour pigments. After cleaning and drying the upholstery, spray a thin coat of T.B. 28 to 30 cm from the support. Wait 15 minutes, then apply a 2nd coat (always 30 cm from the support). Work in cross coats (first spray in horizontal direction and carry out the second spray in vertical direction). For a perfect success, it is enough to respect the distance between the support and the nozzle of the aerosol (30 centimetres). Above all, do not forget to purge the aerosol nozzle upside down at the end of the work. With a T.B. 28 aerosol, you can treat an area of 1 to 2 m2.

T.B. 28 is available in two colours:

  • RAL 9001: Cream white
  • RAL 9010: Pure white

  • T.B.28 - Aerosol 150ml - Recommended public price including tax: 21.50 euros

The interior benches

Bench seats and interior seats are usually covered with suede, alcantara or leather. These materials require regular maintenance, otherwise the colours will fade and dirt will become ingrained.

NET 85 removes dirt and water stains from alcantara, suede, silk and shantung. NET 85 cleans quickly and easily while reviving colours. Using a soft cloth or a slightly damp sponge, apply the product to the stains. Rub lightly. No need to rinse, but allow to dry. For fabrics or colours that are sensitive to cleaners, perform a compatibility test beforehand. On Alcantara, after cleaning, brush the fabric with a soft brush to restore its original appearance.

Leather seats

Over the years, leather has replaced interior furnishing fabrics. It's no longer rare to see the driver's seat or bench seat in leather or imitation. This noble and luxurious material requires regular maintenance or it will harden and crack. In addition, ultraviolet rays and the salty atmosphere alter its quality. If you use a product based on petroleum solvent to clean leather or imitation leather, you risk damaging and hardening it. That is why MATT CHEM has developed DEGREASE CUIR, a special leather cleaner. This cleaner can be used undiluted and applied with a soft sponge. Insist on greasy stains by making circular movements. Then wipe with a damp sponge to remove the product and wipe off with a soft cloth. It is not necessary to rinse.

Feeding the leather

To prevent the aging of the leather, we advise you to protect it by applying the moisturizing oil CUIR 9. This oil provides an antistatic waterproofing effect that protects the cleaned surfaces and delays the encrustation of stains, water drops and various types of dirt. This oil does not change the colour of the leather which keeps its original colour. This treatment prevents the dehydration of the leather responsible for cracking and loss of pigmentation. The leather remains supple and protected.

CUIR 9 is ready to use. Apply to clean and dry leather. Spread the oil evenly without excess with a soft, lint-free cloth. Depending on the initial condition of the surfaces, the penetration and softening time of the leather can be from a few minutes to a few hours. Reapply in the case of old leather that is particularly dry or degraded by light. Finish by smoothing the application with a dry cloth or cotton.
