Emmanuel Lepage proposes us a comic strip with as main hero the lighthouse of Ar-Men. This lighthouse at Point Finistère was built on a piece of stone of the same name and named"Hell of the Underworld" by its keepers. Author-draftsman Emmanuel Lepage was already noticed in 2011 by a comic strip story about the Marion Dufresne"Journey to the Islands of Desolation" . This time he puts his brushes at the service of a famous Breton lighthouse: Ar-Men.
By giving us the daily life of a lighthouse keeper, he describes how this tower built offshore works. This lighthouse keeper tortured by his demons leads us into Breton legends with the legend of the fortress of Ys or the incredible story of the construction of the lighthouse.
By passing from one era to another, by presenting all aspects of the lighthouse from its construction to its operation, the author makes us discover this unique universe in the world which remains always fascinating for a good number of earthlings.
Emmanuel Lepage's drawings, rather blurred, but still detailed, coloured in watercolour, are very beautiful. The rendering of the sea exploding on the lighthouse during the storm, the light of the foyer, the sea spray, are all projections on the sheet of paper that retranscribe an atmosphere. Here the sea is green, almost fluo, the sky is full and Ar-Men stands proudly on all pages.
The first edition is delivered with a DVD containing the documentary"Les gardiens de nos côtes" by Hervé Jouon in which we see the designer working on his comic strip. This documentary about French coastal lighthouses was aired on Thalassa in January 2016.
