Special Edition / Vulcan, the all-inclusive card reader

B&G, a brand of Navico, specializes in navigation electronics for sailing. Compared to competing devices, B&Gs have specialized functions such as lay lines or different winds (true, apparent). On the chartplotter, these functions are particularly useful when you need to tack and not sail into the wind under engine power.

Among the B&G plotters, the Vulcan range is the entry level, the one that opens the doors of this famous brand. This range is available in three screen sizes: 7, 9 and 12 inches. They are fully tactile (no touch) multi-dot devices. Thus, you can position several fingers on the screen to interact: spread your fingers to zoom for example. This range benefits from the flush screen (barely 8 mm thick) with a very nice finish when recessed. Mounting on a bracket is also possible.

Vulcans are multifunctional devices. They integrate a GPS, a map reader, a depth sounder and can be connected to a radar. The Vulcan can be the nerve center of the on-board electronics.

Wind functions

When connected in NMEA 2000, the Vulcan displays the wind sensor information. With dedicated pages like the Sail Steer, it combines all this information into a very readable graphical display. This information can also be found on the chart with the appearance of the lay lines on the map.

A Micro SD with the marine chart

The marine chart, installed on a Micro SD, is located on the back of the unit. It is very practical to leave the front panel waterproof and also to prevent theft. When the Vulcan is installed outdoors, which is often the case on a small sailboat, the SD card remains hidden. The Vulcan is compatible with Navionics, C-Map and NV-Charts.

A sounder module

The sounder module is integrated into the Vulcan. Just connect a probe to it and the information will be shown on the display. This sounder module is very powerful because you can connect a Foward Scan probe to view the bottom towards the front of the boat (very useful for anchoring) or a Structure Scan or Down Scan probe which offers the detection of the nature of the bottom (you can know if you are anchoring on sand or rocks for example).

Able to display the radar

The Vulcan (even in its smallest size) displays images from the brand's 3G or 4G speed cameras. The connection is made via Ethernet (network socket).

Connection to a mobile phone

All Vulcans have Wi-Fi. It is possible to load a (free) application on your mobile and find the entire screen on your tablet or smartphone when you are wearing it. The user can also take control of the device and plot his route or monitor his depth sounder. The Vulcan can be installed outside in the cockpit, where it is safe in the water, and the tablet can be used in the saloon.
