A first Corsican for Hermione

After a short one-day stopover in Nice, on 25 April 2018, the Hermione reached Bastia, Corsica, its last Mediterranean port of call. Three feast days for a historic stopover.

An historic stopover

After a mooring in Calvi on the morning of Thursday 26th April, the frigate reached the commercial port of Bastia, welcomed with music and in the presence of many students. This stopover is historic since, just like La Fayette, who had sailed to the United States on board the Hermione in 1780 to join the American insurgents fighting for their independence, Corsica also had its "liberator" It was Pascal Paoli, Corsican politician, philosopher and general, who worked to build the economic independence of Corsica (Corsican War of Independence of 1729-1743) through the construction of the port of Ile-Rousse and the development of a privateer navy.

In this marina there was a ship named La Galeotta, a Maltese Quebec, a ship of the Paolist navy. And like the Association Hermione La Fayette with the famous frigate, the Corsican association A Madunetta would like to rebuild a replica of this ship in Bastia.

Animations on the program

With its imposing size (66 m long), the frigate is moored at the port of Commerce but can be visited every day (however, it was necessary to book well in advance). Ashore, the town of Bastia and its partners have organised a sea festival with numerous events on the quay and Place Saint-Nicolas, for young and old alike. On the Place Saint-Nicolas there is a Sea Village where a dozen associations from the Corsican maritime world (Marine Natural Park, Bastia Maritime High School, environmental associations...) display their know-how and activities. Animations for children and musical events punctuate this village.
