Team Brunel has won and proves it on this 9th leg of the Volvo Ocean Race. Currently 3rd on the podium in the overall standings, he knows that this "double-count" stage can change everything. So he's taking advantage of these superb conditions to put the throttle on. The Dutch crew has just covered 560.1 nautical miles in 24 hours, improving on the performance of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, which covered 550.8 nautical miles during the 2014-15 edition of the race.
And this record could well be on the verge of being broken by Team AkzoNobel - who has just replaced Team Brunel at the head of the fleet - who have also beaten this 2014-2015 record, but are doing less well than Bouwe Bekking's crew.
With favourable conditions towards Cardiff, it is therefore possible that this new record will fall in the coming days.
