Redevelop the Why
After 3 weeks of sailing, the Why has reached Hawaii, where the first days are devoted to the maintenance of the boat. But above all, the optimization of the boat for the heat of the place. Indeed, for five years the schooner has been sailing in polar waters and has discovered for the first time temperatures of around 30 degrees, but also the associated humidity.
A change of scenery for everyone: portholes and wide open ventilations, the heating has been replaced by a fan and the duvets by sheets, the protective canvas now covers the deck to protect from the sun, a barbecue has taken place on the boat, while two large coolers keep drinks, fruit and vegetables cool.
But the big major change are short diving suits of only 5 mm... A real turning point for divers who are used - for now 12 years - to diving in polar zones, equipped with several thick layers, shoes, etc.
Receipt of the ROV
The crew of Under The Pole recovers its ROV diving robot, an underwater robot with two vertical motors, side motors and propulsion and pivoting on itself equipped with cameras, lighting, etc.. Before each dive, the robot is sent to survey the suitability of the site and during the dive, it will serve as a surveillance relay.
Departure for Tahiti
The Why will soon leave for Tahiti, French Polynesia with 4 members on board. This 18-day voyage will also be Ecuador's first crossing for Why. This will be the opportunity for the whole Under The Pole team to get together for the preparation of the new expedition and for diving training. Scientific work will start on 1 August.
