The American Treasure, an addictive naval fresco

Fabien Clauw is a sailor writer. He decided to romanticize a page of French naval history. In the aftermath of the Revolution, when Napoleon came to power, we follow the adventures of a big-hearted frigate captain. A saga that today counts 2 volumes and that we will follow with pleasure.

Fabien Clauw has just released the second opus of the adventures of Captain Gilles Belmonte. Does this name mean anything to you? It's normal, this sailor is straight out of the author's imagination. This captain commands a frigate 10 years after the 1789 revolution. He sailed for the republic. And if his adventures are purely invented, the whole background is based on historical facts.

This novel reads like an adventure. You don't need to know anything about history or even the navy. Very accessible, our big-hearted hero, in love with the beautiful manoeuvres and the camaraderie (not to mention the pretty women), draws us into incredible stories.

With him, we will discover life on these frigates among men capable of giving their lives for their country. We will cross the Atlantic several times, braving storms and enemies. The battles are also very well described with all the barbarity of these sailors.

The accuracy of the descriptions of the men's maneuvers, costumes and even their way of expressing themselves shows the extensive research that the author had to do to write his books. Volumes that took him several years to write in order to be as accurate as possible (3 years for the last one...).

I must confess that this historical literature has never attracted my reading. But I let myself be carried away by Fabien Clauw's writing and only left Frégate Captain Gilles Belmonte at the end of the two volumes, which were swallowed up very quickly.

On the other hand, "The Treasure of the Americans" is a continuation of the first volume "For the Three Colours". The two books are read one after the other and the second one cannot be read without the first one. And as in a TV series, at the end of the second volume, the reader is still hungry... waiting impatiently for the sequel.
