What to remember about the Spi Ouest-France 2019?

During the Easter weekend, the 41st edition of the Spi Ouest-France took place. The 2019 vintage proved to be a wine tasted under the spring sun and the light coastal breeze. The Spinnaker is a major event of the racing season, attracting regatta enthusiasts to La Trinité-sur-Mer. And for the shipyards, it is also an opportunity to test their new products against the competition.

If you're looking for the sun, it's in La Trinité!

And yes, for the great nautical event of the regatta sailors of the Atlantic coast, the sun had taken its quarters at the Trinity .
The wind, for its part, had decided to express itself further south, leaving the body of water irremediably static every morning and deigning to blow a light breeze in the afternoon.
The nerves of tacticians were put to the test by the appearance, rotation and disappearance of the afternoon breeze. This was without relying on the help of the living water currents to make the part even more strategic. Over these 4 days of racing, the riders had to limit the errors against their competitors to win.

The 41st Spi gathered 436 crews. For 4 days, despite a timid wind, 150 regattas were held in the Bay of Quiberon. Saturday was prolific for the crews, the wind finally inflating the spis, with more than 70 races run during the day, all categories combined.

New classes to stay attractive

Thanks to efforts to stem the erosion of inscriptions, it seems that this edition is bearing fruit thanks to the work of the organizing team. Indeed, the number of competitors registered has reached the 2013 level.
The organisers succeeded in making the event more attractive while maintaining its "hard core" and safe values.

This year again the J80 was the most represented on the water with 66 boats entered.
We will note the benefits of the opening at the Osiris which gathers sailing boats more accessible than in IRC, here we can make a podium with a boat not exceeding 20 000 euros.

The new classes such as the First 24 and Easy To Fly are already a success. One is a pretty fun day boat and the other is an ultra-technical catamaran foiler.

To keep up with the times, the Spi has opened up to doubles crews. Indeed, the duo sailing is increasing in strength, and for this edition there was even a Mini 6.50 and Figaro2 ranking. But it was above all the double IRC that was a hit with 50 classified yachts.

What about the results of the new sailboats on attendait??

The Spi Ouest-France 2019 is probably the most media-intensive amateur regatta event.
As such, the shipyards try to make their new boats shine in order to offer them reputation and prestige.

We can say that in double, it is almost a mission accomplished on the innovative Sun Fast 3300 skippered by Alexandre Ozon and Olivier Grassi on the recent J 99 which finished second and third respectively.

As for JP Kelbert registered with his brand new JPK 10.30, he did not have the same success. Launching only one week before the event precludes any conclusion regarding performance. The ofcet 32 also failed to shine with its results under the Trinitarian sun. As for the Spanish sailboat Mmw33, the crew of Tiger 5 took 6th place in the highly contested IRC B category.

It will be necessary to wait for the development of the new boats and some additional races to know who will win the match of the new racing yachts: JPK 10.30, Sun Fast 3300, J99, Mmw 33, Ofcet 32.
