His current name is D21, before finding his final name. This could have been its registration if it had been made in 1895 in Douarnenez. If this Breton canoe is based on the plans of the canoes of that time, it will not leave the yard until the summer of 2021. It is the result of the will of the Treizour association which is looking for a new boat to share the pleasure of sailing on wooden workboats.
Reviving maritime heritage
Since its creation (more than 40 years ago), this association of Douarnenez carries the revival for wooden boats. She built the first replica of a sardine boat, the Telenn Mor. This 10 m sailing boat was being fished by 6 to 8 solid sailors. It's a very physical unit when there is wind, but also in calm weather when you have to bring back to port the 6 tons of the yacht with the oars.
A "lighter" sailboat
In order to offer an easier, more accessible sail for families and young people, but also in view of the success of "traditional" sea outings (more than 300 outings a year for Telenn Mor!), the association decided to build a smaller, more manoeuvrable canoe.
The D21 will be 7 x 2.50 m. Even if there is no plan of these canoes, which were very present on the Atlantic coast at the end of the 19th century, the association relies on numerous photographic documents and also on a study carried out by the magazine Ar Vag. The naval architect, François Vivier is in charge of drawing up the plans.
A collaborative project
The will of the association is not to build a boat, but to build OURSELF a boat. Indeed, the work will be carried out by the members of the association. Helped by experienced carpenters, the "apprentices" will be guided in pairs. The association has approximately 1.5 years of work before the launch, scheduled for the summer of 2021.
Plans and templates available
In addition, this D21 should serve as a basis for launching similar projects in other locations. Indeed, the architect has already agreed to cede his rights. Thus the plans, and even the tools (template plots) will be available free of charge for anyone who wants to embark on this adventure. The association is already imagining meetings between the different twin canoes.
Overall budget to be found
To build the D21, Treizour has budgeted 43350 euros (a narrow and precise budget realized with the help of the Ateliers de l'Enfer). It's just the supply budget, the labour being voluntary. To find the funding, a participatory campaign was launched.
