Tom Laperche tells in a podcast about a night surfing on a multihull

The very young Tom Laperche covets a 12 m trimaran to Madeira. At night, at the helm, he takes great pleasure in making the boat glide on a swell. He shares this moment with us in this podcast.

I'm Tom Laperche. I'm 22 years old and one of the best moments of sailing was on a trip between Trinidad and the Madeira archipelago off the coast of Morocco. It's summer 2014. I just passed my BAC, I just turned 17. I am the skipper of a 12 m long x 10 wide trimaran. There are 3 of us on board : my little brother and a friend.

One night off the coast of Portugal on the way to these islands. A very clear night with the moon shining in the sky. The boat is going very fast, we have a flat sea, a fairly long swell that allows the boat to really accelerate in the descent of the swell and make the sky glisten with the moon. At the optimum angle to the wind. A fairly strong wind and so the boat slips. It's really multihull conditions where the glide is very present and where it's quite magical. We have a small foil on the leeward float, which allows us to relieve the boat and straighten it up a little and to keep up the speed in every reef. I spend half the night at the helm of the boat sliding, trimming the sails and accelerating through the waves. It's really quite magical sailing conditions.
