Windelo, a new brand of eco-built catamarans in France

The love we have for our planet and the thirst for innovation lead us to create boats that respect people and the environment. Windelo sailors are looking for adventure and love discovery. The passion for the sea and for navigation flows in our veins. Our range of catamarans from 47 to 57 feet offers sailors the possibility to sail with pleasure and safety on spacious, high-performance and eco-friendly boats. Windelo catamarans are entirely built in Canet-en-Roussillon, France.

Windelo catamarans

The Windelo teams have succeeded in an ambitious challenge: to put innovation at the service of ecology, performance, safety and comfort. Designed in collaboration with the architects Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neuman, these boats are available in three models:

  • L' Adventure is the boat for exploration and discovery. It has overdeveloped hull protections. The materials used are very robust and easy to maintain. This version is offered with lifting daggerboards and efficient fixed keels.
  • The Yachting is the most luxurious boat offering high quality materials and equipment. Great attention is paid to the comfort of the fittings. Its basic equipment and available options are designed to make navigation easy and comfortable.
  • The Sport is the most efficient boat. The materials used favor weight savings. Its layout and equipment options also contribute to this lightness and optimize sailing performance.

The structure of Windelo

The originality of the project brought by Windelo is in the eco-design approach of the materials and the construction method.

Driven by deep family values and passionate about boating, Olivier Kauffmann and his son Gautier Kauffmann founded Windelo Catamaran after several years of research on ecological materials in partnership with the Centre des Matériaux des Mines d'Alès. The structure of Windelo catamarans is made from an innovative and eco-responsible sandwich composite that combines basalt fiber and PET, made from recycled plastic bottles. This new innovative composite reduces CO2 emissions by almost 50% compared to the manufacture of traditional PVC/fiberglass composites.

Electric propulsion

Windelo catamarans are equipped with two 20kW or 24kW continuous electric motors, capable of switching to hydrogen generation. This offers great autonomy and allows the batteries to be recharged while under sail. This hydrogeneration, to which is added the electrical energy provided by the photovoltaic panels and by the wind turbines, allows to start the generators only after several hours of operation of the electric motors. The boat will very often not be able to call on its generators (of 17.9 kW) during its navigation days.

In case of long motoring trips, starting the generators increases the boat's range to about 1,100 nautical miles.

A front cockpit

The challenge is to build a boat that combines performance under sail with the pleasure of sailing, while providing pleasant and generous living spaces. The originality of Windelo's response lies in the layout of the cockpit, which brings together the helm and maneuvers in the center of the boat, and in the treatment of the living space that occupies the rear of the nacelle. Just aft of the mast, the forward cockpit offers two helm stations protected from the wind and sea spray, with a beautiful view of the sails and bows. All maneuvers are within easy reach, which limits the need to move around the deck. When not sailing, the cockpit can be more widely protected from the outside and open onto the aft space.

A modular space

On the same level as the cockpit, the nacelle offers a large space whose degree of opening is very flexible. We focused our efforts on the geometry of the material and visual limits of this space and on the opening kinematics of the bays. Once opened, they "disappear" to transform the interior into the exterior. The generosity of the openings also makes it possible to modulate the ventilation of this space by playing on a wide range of openings on its four sides. This work on modularity and on the disappearance of limits is found at the extreme rear of the nacelle, with an articulated platform at the davits that transforms into a floor when anchored, as well as in the cabins at the rear, whose large rotating porthole "jumps" the angle between the side planking and the rear face.

An excellent performance / comfort ratio

Windelo catamarans are recognizable by their sleek hulls designed to increase the performance and seaworthiness of our catamarans.
Designed to combine the pleasure of sailing with the pleasure of travelling, they are capable of delivering above-average sailing performance for catamarans of this size.
The Windelo models bear the unmistakable signature of their architect duo, Christophe BARREAU and Frédéric NEUMAN, with an excellent performance/comfort ratio.
